PRINSIP-HIDUP DALAM KEHARMONISAN DAN KEDAMAIAN

Disadari atau tidak, setiap orang menganut suatu prinsip tertentu di dalam hidupannya, di dalam menjalani kehidupannya ini.
Prinsip itulah yang menjadi landasan sekaligus pegangannya setiap kali seseorang mesti berpikir —menilai, menimbang, dan sebagainya— berucap, dan bertindak. Pendek kata, prinsip-hidupnya inilah yang melandasi setiap gerak dan langkahnya di dalam menjalani kehidupannya ini.

Prinsip-hidup yang kita pegang erat-erat ini, yang kita bangun sendiri berdasarkan pengalaman hidup masing-masing, tanpa sepenuhnya kita sadari, bukan saja menentukan jalan hidup kita, namun juga menentukan berhasil atau tidaknya kita mencapai tujuan-hidup yang kita tetapkan berdasarkan prinsip itu. Makanya, tidaklah terlalu berlebihan kalau dikatakan bahwa prinsip-hidup itulah jalan-hidup dan juga tujuan-hidup kita itu adanya. Keseluruhan kehidupan kita sebetulnya telah kita ringkas sedemikian rupa di dalam —apa yang kita sebut sebagai— prinsip-hidup ini. Kehidupan kita secara keseluruhan merupakan pengejawantahan dari prinsip-hidup itu.

Kalaupun ada di antara kita yang dengan sadar merasa dan mengatakan `tidak menganut suatu prinsip-hidup tertentu', maka secara tidak sadar kita sebetulnya menegaskan bahwa kita penganut suatu prinsip-hidup seperti itu, yakni yang `tidak menganut suatu prinsip-hidup tertentu.' Namun, yang seperti ini teramat langka.
Kalau seseorang benar-benar sadar, meluangkan waktunya sejenak untuk mengamati dengan seksama kehidupannya, dan jujur pada dirinya sendiri, ia akan melihat bahwa ia sebetulnya memang menganut suatu prinsip-hidup tertentu —apakah itu mirip dengan kebanyakan orang, berbeda atau unik, atau malah berseberangan dengan kebanyakan orang.

Ia sangat pribadi sifatnya. Saya bisa saja seagama, seetnis, setradisi dan sebudaya, serta dari keluarga yang berlatar-belakang kehidupan relatif sama dengan istri saya misalnya, namun kami boleh jadi menganut prinsip-hidup yang sama sekali berbeda, atau bahkan bertentangan satu-sama-lain. Atau sebaliknya; kita bisa saja dari etnis, bahkan ras yang berbeda, dengan tradisi, budaya dan agama serta dibesarkan di lingkungan keluarga dengan latar-belakang kehidupan yang sama sekali berbeda, namun kita menganut prinsip-hidup yang sangat mirip satu-sama-lain. Yang jelas, ia amat sangat pribadi, sekaligus juga unik sifatnya. Memang boleh jadi, secara garis-besar, banyak sekali kemiripan di antara kita, namun itu tidak meniadakan keunikan masing-masing. Dan dalam kehidupan suami-istri, ini merupakan sesuatu yang teramat fundamental bagi keharmonisan dan kelangsungan hidup rumah-tangga itu sendiri, tentunya disamping perkembangan kepribadian anak-anak kita.

Hanya dengan menyadari sepenuhnya fakta ini saja, kita bisa menjadi sangat pemaklum dan toleran. Kita sadar kalau tak ada gunanya ngotot, apalagi hendak serta-merta merubah prinsip-hidup yang dibangun, dipupuk dan dianut selama puluhan tahun oleh seseorang, kendati ia adalah pasangan hidup kita, suami atau istri kita sendiri.
Hanya dengan menyadarinya, banyak hal yang tidak mengenakkan —yang memang tak perlu terjadi— tidak terjadi, sehingga kita bisa menjalani kehidupan ini secara jauh lebih efektif dan efisien sejalan dengan prinsip-hidup masing-masing. Dengan begitu, perbedaan, atau bahkan pertentangan, boleh jadi tetap ada dan menimbulkan gesekan-gesekan disana-sini, namun banyak benturan yang bisa ditiadakan, sehingga keharmonisan dan kedamaian —hingga batas-batas tertentu— tetap bisa dinikmati bersama.
